What is Tarkwa Bay?
Tarkwa Bay is a sheltered natural beach accessible only by boat from Lagos Island. No roads lead there. No hawkers on the beach. Just white sand, calm water, and a genuinely laid-back vibe that feels like a different country from the Lagos you know.
Getting There
Take a boat from the Ramp in Lagos Island (near Five Cowries Creek). The ride takes about 15–20 minutes and costs around ₦2,000–₦3,000 per person depending on the service. Boats run from early morning until late afternoon — don't miss the last one back.
What to Bring
- Sunscreen — the Lagos sun on open water is no joke
- Cash — vendors on the beach are cash-only
- A waterproof bag for your phone
- Your own snacks and drinks if you want to save money
What to Expect
The beach itself is clean and well-maintained. You'll find vendors selling fresh coconut water, grilled fish, and small chops along the shore. There are beach chairs and umbrella rentals available. Swim in the calm lagoon-side waters or just lie back and watch the boats pass.
Best Time to Go
Early Saturday morning is the sweet spot — you get there before the crowd and enjoy the beach at its best. By noon it fills up significantly. Avoid public holidays unless you enjoy chaos with your coconut water.
